Facial Wrinkles – Laser Skin Resurfacing
“Wrinkles” about the face can be divided into several categories. Loose folds of skin are generally best treated with facelift, eyelidplasty and browlift procedures, whether performed open or endoscopically. Skin texture changes can be treated with microdermabrasion. This can be performed in the office without any recovery time. Follow-up home skin care treatments help maintain these results. Dynamic wrinkles like those between the eyebrows are treated with Botox to relax the muscles causing the wrinkle. Fixed wrinkles in the skin (frown lines, laugh lines) about the eyes, mouth or forehead have traditionally been treated with deep chemical peeling (phenol) or dermabrasion.
Laser skin resurfacing is a newer treatment for these wrinkles. These treatments can be ablative or non-ablative as well as fractional or non-fractional. Ablative lasers like CO2 and Erbium:YAG vaporize thin layers of skin leaving a raw surface that heals over a few days followed by redness for a few weeks or sometimes longer. Non-ablative lasers like the fractional laser Fraxel Re:Store don’t vaporize skin but create tiny columns of coagulated tissue that leaves an intact skin surface but replaces or “resurfaces” the column of skin invisibly over a few weeks. These fractional non-ablative treatments are typically performed in a series (multiple treatments). Modern resurfacing lasers allow very gradable treatments from very light to very aggressive depending on the severity of wrinkling and the length of recovery time, if any, which is acceptable to you.
