During most of our lives, our skin is not well balanced, being too oily or dry. As skin ages and suffers the results of accumulated sun damage, these problems become more pronounced. The need for ongoing skin maintenance increases. Advances in skin care products and treatments provide a growing range of options for meeting these needs. With the burgeoning selection, comes a greater need to carefully match the products and treatments your skin needs and insure that the combination used is safe and effective.
Dr. Bass was one of the developers of the first clinical protocols for microdermabrasion used in this country. He has also served as a consultant on skin care to a number of companies, helping to evaluate and develop new skin care products and treatments. This experience has led Dr. Bass to develop an integrated program of skin care, Sylph Skin, which integrates home skin care products, in-office skin care treatments and medical procedures such as laser treatments for wrinkles, pigment and vascular changes to help maintain and restore skin to its youthful state.
We are proud to be able to offer these services in the private and relaxed environment that Dr. Bass and his staff have created in our offices.
Selected Facial Treatments
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treatment:
For many people, a lifetime in the sun leads to an accumulation of pigmentation, redness or rosacea and broken blood vessels on may parts of the body, including the face, hands, back, chest, and neck. Through a simple laser procedure, this pigment can be permanently destroyed and removed. Generally, pigment treatments are performed in a series of 2-3 treatments, spaced about 3-4 weeks apart. There is mild redness after each treatment, usually for a few days but the skin is not raw or open. Make-up can immediately be applied. Dr. Bass uses the Palomar Starlux500 system which has the power and versatility to treat these conditions on all skin types. How it Works:
IPL delivers a pulse of bright light that targets pigment in the skin while leaving non-pigmented cells intact. This allows the laser to destroy pigment without damaging the skin itself.
Laser Hair Reduction:
Hair Reduction using lasers and light sources is one of the most popular treatments performed, and allows you to permanently be rid of the burden of unwanted hair, shaving, and waxing. A series of 5 treatments is recommended for a satisfactory result. The number of treatments can vary, however, based upon the individual’s hair color, skin type, and various physiologic factors influencing hair growth.
How It Works:
The Starlux IPL (which is actually a light source and not technically a laser) targets the pigment in hair follicles and kills the hair at its root. However, because hair grows in cycles, at any given time certain hair follicles are dormant and not in a pigmented stage making them invisible to the laser or light source. In order to target most of the hair follicles the treatments must be spaced at least 1 month apart. With sequential treatments the follicle eventually becomes “miniaturized.” At this stage the follicle produces no hair at all and remains a fibrous tract.
What to Expect:
A rubber band snap is felt. We may use a numbing cream but every person’s tolerance is different. Patients must arrive shaved in the areas to be treated. No waxing, depilatories or plucking allowed for at least 1 month prior to the treatment.
Microdermabrasion is a skin restoration process to reduce or eliminate effects of aging, sun exposure, pigmentation, acne scars and active acne. Treatments are performed as a series with or without a facial. Typically more than one treatment may be needed to repair facial skin effected by aging and the sun, therefore packages are sold in a series of 6. Microdermabrasion removes old dead layers of the skin surface and gently clears pores, leaving the skin looking healthier and firmer. The length of treatment is dependent on the condition of the skin and skin type. In addition, microdermabrasion is pain free and requires no down time!
Anti-Aging Glycolic Treatment:
Anti-aging glycolic treatments restores the glow to sun damaged and neglected skin. Improves skin imperfections, softens lines, leaving skin soft, smooth and more radiant. Normal side effects include temporary irritation, dryness, and redness, nonetheless after the skin adjusts to the glycolic treatment, the symptoms will fade. It is necessary that sun block is continuously applied to protect the skin from ultraviolet light, given that anti-aging glycolic treatments thins the outer layer of the skin. After the initial treatment series, glycolic lotion and/or facial wash can be used at home to maintain the skin.
